ZooNooz, June 2006
Spring has been busy and made it tough to put digits to word processor to get this edition of the news letter off the ground.
People have often asked what it takes to run a zoo and I have always compared it to being a farmer.
Take care of you animals and all is well.
This last few weeks as I have been working around the zoo , repairing fences, building new pen, organizing the displays to better show off the animals, I recognized huge differences between the 2 jobs.
First of all I noticed that after 13 years…. Most of the animals are ones that we have bottle raised, have names, and distinct personalities that are as obvious to us as the personalities of children are to a teacher.
In fact, most of our animals today are a loved part of out family since they were born, lovingly raised on the bottle, and grown into a fine mother or father in their own right.
Secondly, farmers don't deal with the public, which can also be a most rewarding experience.
Over the years we have had thousands of season pass holders spend time at the zoo.
It was always a pleasure to watch the children gain confidence with the animals, interact with them, and become like family to us.
Both farming and zoo keeping are hard work, but I would have to reflect and feel very lucky to have my job.
Visit our Zoo this weekend, weather looks promising and all our animals will be out to see you!
