ZOONOOZ March 2007 - oshawazoo.ca

Finally the cold weather has allowed me the time to get caught up on a long overdue newsletter.

Since my last entry 3 of our camels were off to Toronto to join the Rockettes and the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show.

Joe Hedrick, of Hedrick Promotions Inc., approached us last June about doing the show. He sent his "camel whisperer", Monte to Canada to get the girls in star form. It amazed me to see someone so patient and gentle get the camels to perform so well!

I saw the show from both in front and behind the stage... Oshawa's actresses are something for this city to be proud of!
His assistants Tyler and Tony, had our sheep walking on leads like puppies within a few days.

On New Years Eve, Catherine Stockman, a wallaby expert and editor of A Breed Apart Magazine, dropped by for a peek at the kangaroo crew.

To our shock, last years little albino wallaby, Powder, had a 3 day old baby in her pouch!
I was lucky enough to get a look at it a week later. Imagine a little pink blob, with a big head and long back legs and tail, smaller than a looney!

We now know it' to be a female and grey in colour.

All 3 of our female wallabies should have babies sticking their heads out by summer.

It should be cute this spring seeing the little grey head sticking out of the pure white mom's pouch!
We acquired 1 male and 3 female Japanese Sika deer deer.
These beautiful deer are dark in colour with a bright white rump.
The thing that makes them really special is their song. It is a memory I have from growing up with them and everyone who hears it falls in love!

The deer were not tame when we got them, but winter deer taming volunteers, Darlene, Jake and Luke have been getting them settled into the easy Going "OZ" attitude.

We have been very lucky with volunteers. Last summer Abrielle and Shelby started helping out.
What a great couple of kids!

I know that I've said it before, but animal loving kids turn into the nicest young adults.
Long time volunteer Cali, (she has been volunteering since she was 12), is off to the Australian Miss Teen World Contest in Sydney this April. We wish her a great trip!

We will have a second group of lemurs on display this year. We just acquired "Ringo" from near Ottawa, and our Girl thinks he's pretty sweet stuff!
We hope that this love will translate into all kinds of leaping grandkids for us.
So now all that we have to do is wait for this snow to disappear, so that we can get everything up and running again.

We have the prettiest flock of wee lambs that you have ever seen! and 2 baby camels ready to be born anytime. This time of year is always a nail biter for keepers and animals....it's time for some warm days and green grass.

Remember we start opening weekends as soon as the grass turns green.

If you are not sure visit our website or call (905) 655 5236 and we will make sure the message is kept up to date.
Remember that the sooner you get to the zoo and buy your season's pass, the more joy you and your children are going to get out of our friendly animals!

I am looking forward to seeing you all again soon.
