Hello All,
It has been a long winter.
I have never plowed so much snow before.
The temperatures, however were not as extreme as in some winters, so the animals faired a lot
better than in winter's of extreme cold and melt.
The large amount of snow means a large cleanup of hay piles etc. as the snow buried huge quantities of good hay, meaning that we had to feed on top of the buried stuff.
Just like with humans, the animals are getting desperate for outdoors!
This afternoon, April 18, the maras, wallabies, and the fox will be going outside.
By the weekend we will even have the lemurs out and be able to show off our new baby!
We also have a new male Brown Lemur!
We already have a bunch of babies on the bottle for the kids to feed.
My house has smelled like animal poop since the last week of January!
Thing began with a very sick baby donkey and too much snow to get her outside when she was strong enough.
Zephyre, was totally house trained in 2 days. She only had a single accident on the floor her first day and then it was all on her blanket in her pen!
Other than that she had the run of the house and was beginning to learn how to climb the stairs.
Four lambs and a little goat called Vacuum, join her for our scheduled baby feedings.
During the week, Mrs. Pellerin, a teacher from Kedron PS, and her children have been keeping the lambs and goat for us.
They have them almost trained to walk like little dogs on their leads!
Over the winter I took an environmental farm course.
As you know, we sit on top of the beautiful Oak Ridges moraine, and near the source of the Oshawa Creek.
The idea of the course is to protect this vital natural resource and improve upon the natural habitat.
You will be seeing some big changes over the summer in this regard.
We have always boasted clean and green. Now cleaner and greener on the way!
The provincial government is hoping to pass legislation to set standards for roadside zoos.
Bravo!
So many places provide minimal care and rotten living conditions that something needed done.
The weakness in the legislation is that it assumes CZA approved zoos are all up to scratch and should not be subject to inspection.
We have heard horror stories about approved institutions!
Let local humane societies inspect all local institutions, give advise on exhibits that need improving to better engage the animals, or shut down the bad zoos.
This legislation if properly applied can only help Zoos and more importantly their critters.
This year we will be opened for a much longer 7 day a week season.
Beginning Mother's Day weekend we will be open daily, weather permitting until Thanks Giving.
We will be open nice weekend days until that time.
For people who come more than once per season, remember the sooner you buy your seasonal pass, the more often you will be able to come see the animals!
Seasonal passes are still the same great value... pay double the one day admission... come for the whole year!
We also have seasonal passes for day cares and great rates for birthday parties - ask us for more details!
See you all soon, hopefully this weekend!
